Off late, we have been really mindful about our impact on the environment. With the rising pollution levels, our duty as citizens of Earth has also escalated.
So while we were talking about the various pollutants and how we are creating waste, we realized that we are really just doing ‘the talk’. Though we care about the environment, we are doing much less.
Now since we got talking on the topic, I told my boy how we should stop using plastic and carry a bag with us whenever we go shopping. Plastic is a major problem and one of top concerns for the environment.
It is estimated that we generate more than 15,000 tonnes of plastic waste everyday. And that’s just the figure for our country. The global count is much higher.
Such is the plight that there exists a “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, between California and Hawaii, which is a build-up of about 80,000 tonnes of plastic!!
To sensitise him on the effect of plastic of marine and animal life we watched this video together.
My son was really troubled after watching how we are making animals suffer. To do our bit, we decided to keep a cloth bag handy in our cars so whenever we go shopping we can say NO to plastic bags.
This resolution got us to make our own no-sew bags from an old t-shirt. Yes, we recycled an old t-shirt into a bag. Here is what you need:
- Old t-shirt
- Scale
- Marker
- Scissors
Step 1: Fold the t-shirt lengthwise and lay it flat on the floor taking care there are no creases.
Step 2: Cut around the arm hole and the neck. You would want to cut a deep oval around the neck.
Step 3: Using a scale and marker, draw a line 5’’ from the bottom edge of the t-shirt.
Step 4: Cut along the bottom edge of the t-shirt towards the line drawn so as to make 1’’ wide strips across the width of the t-shirt.
Step 5: Tie the front and back strips together in tight double knots.
That’s it! Your t-shirt bad is ready. It is so easy and fun. Keep one forever in the dashboard of your car so there is no way to forget it at home.
