QUESTION FOR KIDS: IS AUSTRALIA AN ISLAND?
Technically speaking, the answer is no. Australia is a continent, not an island.
Here’s why:
- A Continent is typically defined as a large, continuous mass of land that is separated from other landmasses by oceans.
- An Island is a landmass that is surrounded by water on all sides and is smaller than a continent.
ENCOURAGE THINKING: DISCUSSION STARTERS
Help kids to think, compare and contrast with these discussion starters:
1. Australia is so big that it has deserts, rainforests, and beaches all in one place. Do you think a regular island could have all of that? Why or why not?”
2. Greenland is called the largest island, but it’s way smaller than Australia. Why do you think Greenland is an island, but Australia is not?
3. Imagine you’re naming Earth’s landmasses. Would you call Australia a giant island or something different? What name would you give it?
4. If you could visit Australia, what would you want to see—kangaroos, the Great Barrier Reef, or something else? Do you think you’d see these on a regular island?”
5. What’s the difference between a continent and an island? Can you name other continents and islands to compare?”
And that’s all for this week! Hope you enjoyed this newsletter.
